SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – Lisa Masella canned 16 points (including her 1,000th career point) and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Western New England College women’s basketball team defeated Plattsburgh State, 72-50. Masella’s 1,000th point will be acknowledged on Tuesday, December 6, when the Golden Bears host Western Connecticut State University.

COLCHESTER, Vermont – Tierney Carey wasted little time making a mark with the Saint Michael’s College women’s swimming and diving team. In her collegiate debut, the freshman – a 2005 graduate of Newtown High School – won one of two one-meter diving events and finished third in the other as the Purple Knights fell, 127-114, to Colby-Sawyer College. The performance earned Carey the Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Diving Athlete of the Week honors.

PLYMOUTH, New Hampshire – Allison Frobey was named to the 2005 All-Little East Conference team after another strong performance for the Plymouth State University women’s soccer team. It was the second such selection for the Panthers co-captain, a 2003 graduate of Newtown High School. A 5-foot-2 sweeper, Frobey backboned a Panther defense that posted two shutouts this season and allowed two or fewer goals in 11 of 17 games. Frobey has started all 50 games in her collegiate career and has contributed two assists to the offense the past two seasons. The Panthers finished 4-11-2.

WORCESTER, Massachusetts – Junior goalkeeper Matt Pachniuk was one of four Wheaton College men’s soccer players to be named to the NEWMAC All-Conference team. It was the second such selection for Pachniuk, a 2003 graduate of Newtown High School. Pachniuk was 10-4-2 with six shutouts with a 0.74 goals-against average, allowing just 12 goals in 16 games with a .848 save percentage. The Lyons finished 13-5-2.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pennsylvania – Chelsea Morin scored seven goals and assisted on four others as the Ursinus College women’s soccer team posted a 13-5-2 record and reached the semi-finals of the Centennial Conference tournament. Morin scored in the 21st minute to lead the Bears to a 2-1 overtime win over defending CC champion Gettysburg in the first round of the conference tournament. The Bears lost to Dickinson College, 1-0, in the semifinals before falling to Carnegie Mellon, 4-1, in the semifinals of the ECAC tournament. Morin – a 2004 graduate of Newtown High School – was second on the team in points (18) and second on the team in shots (52) while registering two game-winning goals along the way.

WORCESTER, Massachusetts – Jake Maher has already become an integral part of the Wheaton College men’s swimming and diving team. In a recent 118-110 win over Clark University, Maher – a 2005 graduate of Newtown High School – helped lead the 200-yard medley relay team to a win. In an easy win over Bridgewater State, Maher finished third in the 200 individual medley and helped lead the 200 medley relay to another win. The Lyons dropped their first meet last Saturday to Springfield (and now boast a 6-1 mark) and in that loss Maher helped lead the 200 freestyle relay team to a second-place finish.

CASTLETON, Vermont – Kim Allen made seven saves as the Castleton State College women’s soccer team defeated Farmington, 2-1, to earn the North Atlantic Conference championship early last month. The win put the Spartans into the NCAA Division III tournament … where they fell to Springfield, 3-0. Allen – a 2004 graduate of Newtown High School – played in 20 games for the 15-5-2 Spartans, starting 17 of them. She logged more than 1,700 minutes in the net and allowed just 24 goals (1.21 goals-against average) while making 111 saves (.822 save percentage). She was 14-4-2 on the year.

BRISTOL, Rhode Island – Erin Carolan was named to the All-Commonwealth Coast Conference Volleyball Second Team for the second straight season at Roger Williams University. Carolan – a 2001 graduate of Newtown High School – was second on the team in kills with 260 and finished her four-year career with a school-record 1,017 kills. Carolan also registered 22 service aces, 210 digs and 36 blocks for the 19-9 Hawks. The Hawks were third in the CCC and were ranked sixth in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC).

BRISTOL, Rhode Island – Brendan Cavanaugh scored two goals and assisted on five others as the Rogers Williams University men’s soccer team finished 17-3-3, 11-0-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Hawks successfully defended their 2004 CCC championship and advanced into the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament before falling, 1-0, to The College of New Jersey. Cavanaugh – a 2003 graduate of the Salisbury School – scored in the Hawks’ 3-0 win over Mount Ida in the first round of the tournament.

WILLIMANTIC – Derek Miles, a 2003 graduate of Newtown High School, was named for the second time to the All-Little East Conference first team. Last year, Miles was named to the All-LEC second team.

MONTCLAIR, New Jersey – Brian Miles, a 2005 graduate of Newtown High School, appeared in 18 games and notched a pair of assists as the Montclair State University men’s soccer team finished 10-7-2.

ROLLA, Missouri – Nick Mentessana, a 2005 graduate of Newtown High School, appeared in 14 games and notched one assist for the 8-9-3 men’s soccer team at the University of Missouri-Rolla.

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – Ryan Davies, a 2005 graduate of Newtown High School, appeared in nine games for the 2-14-1 Red Hawks of Saint Joseph’s College. Davies started three games.

DANBURY – Amanda Hadgraft  scored a pair of goals for the Western Connecticut State University women’s field hockey team. Hadgraft, a 2004 graduate of Newtown High School, appeared in 11 games, starting seven, for the 1-12-0 Lady Colonials.

FAIRFIELD – Shifting to defense, Mike Troy notched a pair of assists in 20 games as the Fairfield University men’s soccer team went 13-4-3 and reached the second round of the MAAC Tournament before falling to Marist, 2-1.

BURLINGTON, Vermont – Amy Robinson, a 2005 graduate of Newtown High School, helped lead the 200 freestyle relay team of the University of Vermont to a win against the University of New Hampshire. After winning their first three meets, the Lady Catamounts dropped to 4-4 with a loss to UNH. In a win over Saint Francis College on November 12, Robinson finished first in the 50-yard freestyle at 26.67.

HAMDEN – In her second season with the Quinnipiac University women’s volleyball team Stephanie Logan, a 2004 graduate of Newtown High School, registered 194 kills (second on the team) with 10 service aces, 16 digs and 67 blocks (third on the team). The sophomore hitter appeared in 24 matches and 81 games (most on the team) as the Lady Bobcats finished 6-19. She registered 175 kills as a freshman, giving her 369 kills in her career.
