Open House & Living History Demonstration

Sunday At Matthew Curtiss House

Newtown Historical Society will host its annual Holiday Open House & Living History Demonstration this weekend.

The Matthew Curtiss House, an 18th Century saltbox at 44 Main Street, will be open for public visits on Sunday, December 4, from 12 to 4 pm. Members will be showing off some of the historical society’s more recent acquisitions, and junior and senior docents — in costume — will serve cookies and cider and will be available to answer questions. Docents will also be able to offer guided tours of the circa 1750 dwelling that was purchased by its namesake in 1781.

The open house will also serve as a Family Games Day. What did our ancestors do after all the chores were done? Visitors on Sunday will be invited to join a game of checkers, 9 Men Morris, cards, jacks, Pick Up Sticks, Cat’s Cradle or even a truly Newtown game of Scrabble.

Newtown Historical Society can be reached for additional information at 203-426-5937 or www.NewtownHistory.org. No admission is charged for its open house events, but donations are always appreciated.
