Judaism Holds Hanukkah Party

WESTPORT — The sound of holiday songs, the aroma of potato lakes, and the flicker of menorah candles will transform the Bedford Middle School cafeteria on Sunday, December 5, as the Congregation for Humanistic Judaism (CHJ) holds its annual Family Hanukkah Party, beginning at 10 am.

The CHJ Hanukkah party will feature a holiday service, performances by the Congregation’s Sunday school students, crafts, games, food, and fun. The public is invited to attend.

The holiday of Hanukkah — also known as “The Festival of Lights” — commemorates the victory in 165 BC of the Jewish people over Syrian rulers, and the rededication of the Temple at Jerusalem. The holiday is celebrated for eight days, beginning this year on the evening of December 7. Each night, an additional candle is lit in a special candelabra called a menorah.

CHJ is a welcoming, supportive community for Jewish identity and values. It is run as a cooperative, and offers a full range of activities, including Sunday school, adult education, holiday observances, discussion groups, and retreats. Information on CHJ is at www.humanisticjews.org. Reservations are not required, but to assure yourself edible dreydls call CHJ at 203-226-5451.
