GIRLS 8TH GRADE

 

The girls’ eighth-grade traveling team has stormed to five wins in its first five games, including four in a row at the New Canaan Tournament. Ken Good, who is also an assistant coach with the Newtown High School girls’ basketball team, coaches the travelers. Here are the results:

NEWTOWN 32, LEWISBORO (NY) 16: Jackie Curran scored 10 points while Emily Nezvesky and Ashley Larocque chipped in with six points apiece to lead Newtown. Siobhan Cooper added four and Katie O’Connor pulled down 15 rebounds.

NEWTOWN 45, NEW CANAAN 12: Ashley Larocque tossed in 12 points as Emily Nezvesky, Jackie Curran and Megan LaFlamme combined for 20 to pace Newtown in its first win in the New Canaan Tournament. Courtney Brunton had a good floor game and chipped in with five points. Jessica Palermo and Jackie Ercole combined for 10 rebounds.

NEWTOWN 39, WESTON 24: Balanced scoring (nine players scored points) and tenacious defense led the way. Ashley Larcoque scored eight points while Meghan Kelley and Katie O’Connor chipped in with five points apiece. Siobhan Cooper and Jessica Palermo had fine games.

NEWTOWN 52, WESTPORT 23: In the tournament semi-finals, Newtown dominated Westport. Jackie Curran and Katie O’Connor combined to pull down 26 rebounds and combined for 24 points to lead Newtown to the win. Megan LaFlamme chipped in with eight points while Siobhan Cooper and Courtney Brunton combined for 10 points. Jackie Ercole and Meghan Kelley had solid floor games.

NEWTOWN 44, WILTON 23: Newtown claimed the tournament championship with balanced scoring and pressure defense. Ashley Larocque scored 15 points and Meghan LaFlamme added 11 to lead Newtown. Emily Nezvesky had a good floor game from the point while Meghan Kelley and Jessica Palermo paced the defense. Jackie Curran and Katie O’Connor were strong under the glass.

 

BOYS 7TH GRADE

 

BETHEL 46, NEWTOWN 37: Drew Harmata scored 11 points, but overall poor shooting resulted in a loss for Newtown. Alister Ratcliff and Marc Ingerman scored five points apiece. Ingerman and Harmata had nine rebounds each.

NEWTOWN 33, NEW MILFORD 25: Drew Harmata scored eight points, Drew Adamek added seven, and Marc Ingerman contributed six as Newtown won its first game of the season. Stephen Kean controlled the boards with 12 rebounds. After trailing for most of the first half in this game, Newtown got a spark from an Alex Caruso bucket with 26 seconds left in the first half. Caruso, Adamek and Jack Capito led a strong pressure defense in the second half.

BOYS 6TH GRADE

 

NEWTOWN 57, DARIEN 9: Ryan McGrath scored 14 points while Joey DeVellis and Mike Kennedy added 10 apiece, but it was the defense that stole the show as it limited Darien to nine points. Kevin Regan, Tucker Kass, Brian Conroy and Joe Bowen were strong off the glass while McGrath, Conroy, Tad Pierson and Justin Miller powered a tough man-to-man defense. Jack Quinn and Regan combined for 14 points.

NEWTOWN 44, WESTPORT 27: The Blue Devils pulled away in the second half. Kevin Regan, Ryan McGrath, Joey DeVellis and Brian Conroy combined for 30 points. Regan, Conroy, Tad Pierson and Mike Kennedy controlled the board while Jack Quinn and DeVellis were solid at the point.

NEWTOWN 79, FAIRFIELD 44: Kevin Regan scored 16 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as the Blue Devils exploded past Fairfield. Jack Quinn chipped in with 11 points while Mike Kennedy and Ryan McGrath had 10 points apiece. Tad Pierson, Joe Bowen and Joey DeVellis combined for 20 points. DeVellis also dished off nine assists while Brian Conroy and Tucker Kass were strong under the glass. Justin Miller knocked down the only three-pointer of the game.

WESTON 42, NEWTOWN 32: Although tie at the half, 21-21, the Blue Devils couldn’t shut down a tough Weston squad. Ryan McGrath and Kevin Regan each had seven points to lead Newtown. Joe Bowen and Joe DeVellis chipped in with five points apiece as DeVellis and Justin Miller each canned a three-point field goal. Tucker Kass made six steals while Brian Conroy controlled the boards.

The Blue Devils, now 3-1, will host Fairfield at 3 pm on Sunday, December 10.

 

BOYS 5TH GRADE

 

WESTPORT 42, NEWTOWN 22: It was close in the first half, with Westport clinging to a 17-16 lead, but Westport pulled away. Jason Smith scored six points and Danny Smith added four to lead Newtown. Matt Boland, Danny Giorno and Bob Lapple were strong on defense.

NEWTOWN 37, NEW FAIRFIELD 13: PJ Cochrane scored 11 points, Danny Smith added six, and Kevin Troy chipped in with five to lead Newtown to the win. Jared Modzelewski and Michael Maher scored four points each and led the defense. Greg Rodden was strong on the boards with 10 rebounds.
