WILLIAM KENTRIDGE PRINTS AT SMITH COLLEGE MUSEUM

AVV #721193

NORTHAMPTON, MASS. — The Smith College Museum of Art presents the exhibition “William Kentridge Prints,” on view through January 6.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1955, Kentridge has lived, attended school and worked there — all within a two-mile radius — since then. He is known for significant bodies of work in three media: paper, film and theater design. “William Kentridge Prints” includes a wide range of works that represent more than a third of the artist’s printed output.

Much of Kentridge’s art conveys a sense of political engagement and awareness, stemming from his experience living in South Africa during apartheid. He has created sets for several puppet, theater and opera productions, including Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Kentridge is designing sets for the Metropolitan Opera’s production of The Nose, by Shostakovich, due to open in 2010.

The museum is on Elm Street at Bedford Terrace. For information, 413-585-2760 or www.smith.edu/artmuseum.
