Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*A NEW ART CLASS with Diana Baxter will be every Monday starting December 7, from 2 to 4 pm. December classes will start with poinsettias and pine cones using only acrylics.

*SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, December 8, Annual Christmas Party at The Waterview, $35 per person for gourmet buffet, champagne toast, music and entertainment. Reservations are being taken now.

*Visit MOHEGAN SUN on Thursday, December 10. Depart at 8 am. Cost is $30. Tickets are still available.

Upcoming Programs

*As a wartime veteran or the surviving spouse of a wartime veteran, you are entitled to certain VA benefits. Attend the VETERANS AID BENEFIT SUPPORT SEMINAR on Tuesday, December 15, at 1 pm to learn about the benefits available.

*Representative Chris Lyddy will be holding office hours at the center on Wednesday, December 16, from 1:30 to 3 pm, with information on new laws.

*CHRISTMAS BINGO/CAROLING will be Thursday, December 17, 1 to 4 pm. Bring an appetizer to share.

*Attention all cookie swappers. ANNUAL COOKIE SWAP will be Friday, December 18, at 1 pm. Make two dozen cookies and bring recipe to hand out.

*COMMISSION ON AGING talk will be Monday, December 21, at 5 pm.

Overnight Trips

*Overnight at MOHEGAN SUN on January 28 and 29, which includes two buffets or choice of food coupons, hotel accommodations, and $20 free bet. Depart at 8 am; cost is $109 per person, double; $169, single; and $104, triple.

*Depart at 8:30 am on April 28 and 29 for a SINATRA TRIBUTE at Mount Haven Resort in Milford,  Penn., which includes a welcome party with hors d’oeuvres, a five-course meal, and live entertainment featuring Joe Amato as Frank Sinatra. Spend the night in a Jacuzzi suite each equipped with a fireplace. On the second day, enjoy a full breakfast buffet and then depart to Monticello Gaming & Raceway. A complete gala buffet lunch and complimentary glass of wine or beer is included. Cost is $189 for doubles, $245 for singles, and $185 for triples.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am with Mary Matern.

*Iris card folding CRAFT CLASS every Thursday at 1 pm.

*MOVIE DAY Mondays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy some Christmas Classic movies with a friend.

Monday: AM hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, weaving, exercise, movie.

Tuesday: AM cards for troops, line dancing; PM Tai Chi.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM exercise.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, cards; PM iris card folding craft class, Scrabble, Wii bowling.

Friday: AM mah jongg, Quilts of Valor, exercise class, PM Ecumenical Bible study group, knitting/crocheting, movie.

Menu For Week Of

December 7–11

Monday: Hungarian goulash served over egg noodles, cut green beans, buttermilk biscuits, peaches.

Tuesday: Parmesan-encrusted fish with lemon and tarter sauce, mashed potato, Oriental blend vegetables, wheat bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Wednesday: Oven roasted chicken quarter, rice and beans, chopped spinach, pumpernickel dinner roll, pears.

Thursday: Cheese lasagna, meatballs in marinara sauce, parmesan cheese, Caesar salad with croutons and Caesar dressing, garlic bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

And for planning ahead —

Monday: December 14: Oven fried chicken quarter, macaroni and cheese, green peas, potato bread, fresh fruit.

Tuesday: December 15: Stuffed pepper with tomato sauce, boiled potato with parsley, diced carrots, seedless rye bread, iced vanilla cake.
