NEW YORK TRIBAL, TEXTILES ARTS SHOW WILL MOVE TO NEW VENUE, DATES

NEW YORK CITY — Show promoter Caskey Lees announces a major change in venue and timing for the 14th annual New York International Tribal and Textile Arts Show.

After nine years at the Park Avenue Armory, the 2008 show will return to its original locations, the 69th Regiment Armory, Lexington Avenue at 26th Street and to more normal show days; an evening opening on Wednesday, May 14; and show hours, Thursday through Sunday, May 15–18.

“When the new ownership of the Park Avenue Armory decided to triple the rent and add tens of thousands of dollars in additional fees to the building’s cost,” Bill Caskey said, “We decided that it made no sense to ask dealers in tribal arts and textiles to absorb any portion of that increase.”

“These remarkable objects are among the most affordable of all important art works, with few costing more than $25,000, so even for the world’s most important galleries — most of which are a part of our show — the new Park Avenue rent makes little business sense,” Caskey said.

The move back to the 69th Regiment Armory also gives the International Tribal and Textile Arts Show a more reasonable schedule. “Without the conflict of another fair moving out of the Park Avenue Armory late the week of our opening,” Caskey said, “We will have time for a more elaborate show set up, and can open the Tribal and Textile Arts Show on a Wednesday night and run through the weekend.”

The show will also coincide with important tribal auctions at Sotheby’s May 16–17. The New York International Tribal and Textile Arts Show’s preview ($90 per person) will be from 6 to 10 pm, Wednesday, May 14, and the show will be open from 11 am to 7:30 pm, Thursday through Saturday, and 11 am to 5 pm, Sunday. General admission is $15 per person for the run of the show.

Caskey Lees also produces a number of other winter and spring shows on the West Coast and in 2008, they will include: San Francisco Arts of Pacific Asia Show, February 1–3, Fort Mason Center; San Francisco Tribal & Textile Arts Show, February 8–10, Fort Mason Center; and the Los Angeles Antiques Show, April 24–27, Barker Hangar, Santa Monica, Calif.
