To the Editor:

Enclosed for publication is a poem from Lauren Clifford, a member of Women Involved in Newtown, expressing our gratitude for the generosity of Newtowners during a very challenging time. In addition to food drives held by Middle Gate School, Newtown Middle School, Sandy Hook School, Fraser Woods School and Dermatology Associates of Western CT, there were many individual sponsors that stepped up to provide food, toiletry items, and paper goods to help out 73 families for the holiday season.

Another year coping with COVID concerns

Has lengthened the wait ‘til our “normal” returns.

This year was chaotic with quarantine rules,

And hybrid approaches set forth in our schools.

While dealing with distancing, safety and health,

Adjustments were made for prosperity’s wealth—

We altered our schedules, plans, and routines,

Becoming reliant on onerous screens.

We logged in online to attend celebrations,

Like marriages, birthdays, and spring graduations.

We also used screens to converse with physicians

Who told us that kin passed from dire conditions.

Unable to properly share an event

Caused discord, despondence, and great discontent.

Our frontline professionals, too, were burned out,

Encompassed in tension, fatigue, and self-doubt.

By giving us aid of the highest degree,

Essential employees were vital and key,

And sponsors like you were essential as well,

As Newtown had hardships it sought to dispel.

Commendably, you have supplied WIN with food,

Thus boosting the holiday spirit and mood—

Donations from you have fulfilled families’ needs,

Ensuring the happiest season succeeds.

Despite the difficulties presented by the pandemic, Newtowners came through as they always do to help those in need. We are blessed to be connected with this very special town and its friendly and giving residents. WIN thanks everyone involved with this project for their generosity and support. We wish everyone a very happy holiday and a new year filled with peace and health.
