Hawley Students Dress Up In The Spirit Of Giving

Hawley Elementary School students and staff alike became real âcharactersâ recently to raise money for a Ronald McDonald House charity in New Haven.
âFor one dollar or more, any staff member or student at Hawley could dress up as their favorite literary character,â explained lead teacher Judy Pesce, dressed up as beloved maid Amelia Bedelia.
Hawleyâs student council, composed of representatives and alternates from each grade Kâ4, came up with the idea, Ms Pesce said.
âThe response we had was overwhelming,â Ms Pesce said, smiling. âThe generosity of everyone involved was wonderful.â
Each of Hawleyâs five first grade teachers dressed as Oompah Loompahs from Roald Dahlâs Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
âThese are âdisco wigsâ from Party Stop [in Brookfield],â laughed teacher Kathy Leja, tossing her shimmering green tresses.
Students represented a variety of genres, from Marvel Comicsâ classic Spider-Man comic to Kay Thompsonâs Eloise.
âThe students wanted to do something fun,â said Ms Pesce. Students learned that giving could be as fun as it is âa good cause,â she said.
