Hawley Students Dress Up In The Spirit Of Giving

By Larissa Lytwyn

Hawley Elementary School students and staff alike became real “characters” recently to raise money for a Ronald McDonald House charity in New Haven.

“For one dollar or more, any staff member or student at Hawley could dress up as their favorite literary character,” explained lead teacher Judy Pesce, dressed up as beloved maid Amelia Bedelia.

Hawley’s student council, composed of representatives and alternates from each grade K–4, came up with the idea, Ms Pesce said.

“The response we had was overwhelming,” Ms Pesce said, smiling. “The generosity of everyone involved was wonderful.”

Each of Hawley’s five first grade teachers dressed as Oompah Loompahs from Roald Dahl’s Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

“These are ‘disco wigs’ from Party Stop [in Brookfield],” laughed teacher Kathy Leja, tossing her shimmering green tresses.

Students represented a variety of genres, from Marvel Comics’ classic Spider-Man comic to Kay Thompson’s Eloise.

“The students wanted to do something fun,” said Ms Pesce. Students learned that giving could be as fun as it is “a good cause,” she said.

Ronald McDonald House charities provide residential health care to children in need. For more information, contact the New Haven Ronald McDonald House at 203-777-5683 or visit www.rmhc.org.
