Readers who pick up a copy of this week's print edition will find something special waiting for them: the first cover of The Newtown Bee to be printed in full color. Paul Meisel created the original illustration that adorns the December 24, 2021 paper.

His whimsical drawing presents a family of pajama-clad dogs — and one brave cat — gathered around a roaring fireplace. References to multiple holidays, local landmarks, and plenty of surprises await those who take time to look closely at the details within the colorful work of art.

A Newtown resident, Paul is the illustrator of more than 80 books, including early readers, picture books, eight books in the HarperCollins Let’s-Read-And-Find-Out Science Series, and multiple mass market books. He has also written and illustrated 12 books, including My Stinky Summer. Local readers may recognize that one, which was a StoryWalk featured title in July along the paved walking trail at Fairfield Hills.

A two-time Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Award winner, Paul can now add Newtown Bee Christmas cover illustrator to his very impressive resume.

We are proud to add him to the library of artists who have shared their talents for the holiday illustration.

Paul Meisel's illustration is the first to be reproduced in full color on the cover of a Newtown Bee Christmas issue.
