End Academic Semester
Home schooled students involved in Progressive Learning Center ended their academic semester with a âproper English tea partyâ and musical presentation.
The five students, ages six to 12, traveled with two of their instructors to Norfolk, where they were treated to a firsthand account of life in England by Nels and Phyllis White, parents of Newtown resident Kathleen Green.
The day included an authentic British tea party with homemade scones, shortbread, and cucumber sandwiches. Later in the week, students treated their families to a musical presentation, puppet show, and a game of âMedieval Millionaire.â On the final day of the semester, students and instructors had a secret Santa grab bag party and wished each other well as they started their three-week break.
Students at Progressive Learning Center come from Newtown and Danbury. Each family has their own reasons for choosing homeschooling and some have tried public schools already or may choose to enroll in a traditional school in the future. But for the time being, the Progressive Learning Centerâs families say they are content with schooling at home and supplementing with curriculum set up by the Center.
âYou certainly canât beat the individual attention you get here!â added the Center director. âEvery student progresses at their own pace and level with individual guidance and respect for their particular learning style.â
Six-year-old Adam Green said, âI like it because itâs a challenge. Itâs cool too, and my favorite subject is history.â
