A Record Year For

Holiday Basket Deliveries

To the Editor:

It is Saturday night and the Holiday Basket delivery day is over for another year. We set another record. We were done delivering all 95 families by 12:30! I can’t even begin to thank all the people and organizations that make this event a success every year. We don’t thank anyone by name because there are so many of you. I would never want to leave anyone out.

Every year is a surprise and different from all previous years. Last year we had very few gifts to wrap. This year there were so many unexpected gifts dropped off that the wrapping table was busy from 7 am right up until 11 am when we started delivering. People just arrived with new clothes, food, and gifts of all sorts. They hadn’t adopted a family but just wanted to do something.

I was very worried because we are a small organization and had a members sick and a member traveling. This made us short-handed. I shouldn’t have worried though. People who dropped off food and clothes for their family stayed to help. It is remarkable how everything just worked out and we all pulled together.

There were quite a few first-timers either helping at the wrapping table or as hall monitors or delivering. They were all amazed. It is such a memorable and heart-warming experience.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their help and hard work. I know there are quite a few very tired people in Newtown tonight and –– more importantly –– 240 very happy less fortunate ones.

Happy Holidays
