Sean Buckley, 25, of Westbrook, and formerly of Monroe, was sworn in as a police patrol officer on December 15 at the town clerkâs office.
A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Mr Buckley has a bachelor of science degree.
Mr Buckley started his studies at the stateâs municipal police academy in Meriden on December 19. He is scheduled to return to Newtown next May after completing his course of studies at the academy.
The current annual starting pay for police patrol officers is $39,029, plus benefits. The officersâ salaries rise rapidly during their first five years of service.
In the police hiring process, applicants who pass a written test proceed to physical testing. Those who pass physical testing, proceed to oral interviews, which are conducted by a panel of officers from other police departments.
The Police Commission interviews remaining applicants. Extensive background checks, a physical examination, psychological testing, and lie detector testing are used to screen job candidates.
In October, the town hired Domenic Costello of Ansonia and Daniel McAnaspie of Danbury as new police officers.
Mr Costello, 25, is a graduate of Fairfield University and also a graduate of the Quinnipiac University School of Law. Mr McAnaspie, 26, formerly served as a New York City police officer. Both men are now studying at the police academy. They are scheduled to complete the academy in March.
The town plans to hire two more officers in the coming months to bring its roster up to a full complement of 43 sworn officers.
