*Main Floor Exhibit: Two displays near the circulation desk offer memorabilia that document Newtownâs growth during the 20th Century including the founding of the Newtown chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Volume One of The Bugle (circa 1919), pictures from the Boyâs Social and Athletic Club from the Fifties, and photos of the former golf course at Eden Hill in Hattertown.
*First Floor Display Cases: Newtown resident and artist Paula Brinkman is offering âThe Pool Books of Paula Brinkmanâ in the lower level display case. The sketchbooks contain watercolor images painted in Paulaâs diary of her experiences in New York exercising in a pool every day.
*Also, a ballgown worn in 1882 by Mrs E.A. Hawley, aunt of Mary Hawley, is currently on view. Part of the libraryâs antique garment collection, the item was a gift from Mirable Crabtree, and considering its age, is in very good condition.
*Curator Mary Thomas would like to present a display in the fall featuring needlework such as embroidery and needlepoint from local residents. Items would be on temporary loan for display. If you would like to share your creation(s) please call Mary at 203-426-9696.
For Young Adults
*Mask & Wig Players starts the fall season on Tuesday, September 14, at 3 pm.
There will be a tour of the library attic to hear the story of Mary Elizabeth Hawleyâs ghost, and then we will begin planning a Halloween show. This drama group is open to Newtown students and residents in grades 6-12.
Itâs led by Martha Bishop and meets regularly on Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30 in the Story Room.
Adult Programs
*Book Group: The Daytime Book Group will discuss This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald on Monday, September 13, also at 1.
*Mark Twain, A Book Discussion Series with Julie Stern: In this year that will see the publication of Twainâs autobiography, so scandalous that it was kept under wraps for 100 years after his death, letâs read and discuss classic works by Mark Twain and see why he may well be the greatest American novelist.
Join us on Wednesdays at 7:30 for the following titles: Tom Sawyer, September 22; The Prince and the Pauper, October 13; The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, October 22; and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurâs Court, November 10.
*Inside the College Admissions Process: Thursday, September 23, at 7 pm.
Stephanie Wassink-Klein, the owner of Winning Applications, works with families navigating the intricacies of the college and/or graduate school admissions process. She will share insights from her many years of experience as a college admissions officer.
Ms Wassink-Klein will help you gain a keener understanding of the application essay, financial aid and mistakes to avoid. This program will focus on issues of special importance to seniors and juniors, although freshmen and sophomores will also benefit from the talk.
