Blumenthal To Speak On The Challenge Of Racism

DANBURY — Attorney General Richard Blumenthal will speak on “Minority Overrepresentation in Connecticut’s Juvenile Justice System” on Wednesday, October 17, at Ives Auditorium at Western Connecticut State University’s Midtown campus.

The attorney general will be keynote speaker at 8 pm, followed by a community response panel. The event is open to the public and is sponsored by The Greater Danbury Coalition for A Community United, Inc, in cooperation with WestConn’s Office of International Affairs, the Department of Social Work, Justice and Law Administration Division, and The News-Times Newspapers in Education Program.

“Facing the challenges of racism in our state” is the subject of the program that will be facilitated by Sam Deibler, executive director of the Association of Religious Communities (ARC) and a founding member of the Coalition.

Each year the Greater Danbury Coalition sponsors a program to further its mission to eradicate stereotyping and prejudice. The coalition is composed of representatives of organizations and individuals from throughout the Greater Danbury area who are committed to the mission.

The coalition was born 12 years ago under the wing of the Anti-Defamation League of B’Nai B’rith as the Greater Danbury Coalition for a World of Difference. It became the Greater Danbury Coalition for a Community United in 1995, when it was incorporated by the State of Connecticut as a not-for-profit agency.

Membership in the organization is open to all with a minimal fee. It is governed by a board of directors. Meetings are Wednesdays from 1 to 2 pm in The News-Times Conference Room. For more information, contact  Jefferson Wiggins, president, at 426-4520 or  Darlene Jackson, nominating chairperson, at 426-5192.
