Selectman Mooney Says He Would Like To Be Police Chief

Selectman James M. Mooney, the director of campus security at the University

of Bridgeport, has applied to become Newtown's police chief.

Mr Mooney said Tuesday he has been in police work for many years and wants to

serve his hometown as its top law enforcement official.

Michael DeJoseph retired as police chief in March to take a new position as a

technical services manager for the International Association of Police Chiefs

in Virginia. Acting Police Chief Michael Fekete has been serving as head of

the police department since Mr DeJoseph's departure.

Police Commission members were scheduled to meet this week to cull through the

118 applications they have received for the police chief post.

Mr Mooney has a long history in the law enforcement field. He started work as

a state trooper in 1966. As a state police captain, he served as the

commanding officer of the state police's Statewide Narcotics Task Force from

1984 to 1989.
