Council Profiles, BILL BRIMMER
William Brimmer, Republican candidate for the Legislative Council's District
1, would very much like to devote his time and effort to ensuring Newtown
balances its quality of life with economic development. "We should never lose
the character of the town," he says.
The most viable locations for economic development is Fairfield Hills - being
a good location for a type of commerce park - and the Route 6 corridor,
according to the candidate. "I think we could have attractive office buildings
off Exit 9, while keeping it `green,'" he added. "Development will happen as a
result of the sewers."
Other uses for Fairfield Hills, such as town administrative offices, would
have to be carefully considered and based on cost, the candidate says.
A Newtown resident for four years, Mr Brimmer has been a member of the
Republican Town Committee member for four years, served on the Board of Ethics
for three years, and been a trustee on the Library Board for two years.
"I am a team player," says Mr Brimmer. "I have the ability to work within
groups, and listen to both sides of the issues. I like to see a win-win
situtaion [where original proposals can be modified instead of immediately
being rejected]."
His 20 years in the sales/marketing/management area of consumer packaged goods
industry has also provided him with the skill of working within a budget. In
that industry, you are evaluated on profit and loss, says Mr Brimmer.
Of the capital projects "coming up and still not solidified," the candidate
feels the Hawley and Newtown High School projects are the most important. "I
have to take a look at the costs and what we are going to get for our money,"
says Mr Brimmer, who added there was no doubt we needed more room for children
coming through the system. "As far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out
because I have to understand why [costs] are escalating."
