CFDA Offers Scholarships To

Local Students

WETHERSFIELD — Fairfield County students pursuing careers in social services, counseling, nursing, and related fields are invited to apply for funds from a new college scholarship program created by the Connecticut Funeral Directors Association (CFDA).

“We created this program to encourage students to follow their dreams and enter professions that provide emotional and medical support for families,” explains William R. Molloy, chairman of the CFDA’s Scholarship Committee. “A $350 college scholarship will be presented to one student in each of the state’s eight counties.”

“As funeral directors, we help families during what can be very difficult times, so we understand how important these jobs are in providing assistance to people in need,” adds Mr Molloy. “We hope to motivate more young people to consider a future in the ‘helping professions.’”

The college scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing a career in a profession that provides emotional support to families. This includes such professions as counseling, social services, psychology, psychiatry, nursing, medicine, social work, gerontology, and funeral service.

To be eligible for this new scholarship program, candidates must: Live in Connecticut; be a high school senior who will graduate in June 2000; be pursuing a career that provides emotional or physical support for families. This includes such professions as caregiving, counseling, and social services. Students must also have maintained a B grade point average in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades.

The CFDA is comprised of funeral directors at more than 200 funeral homes. It is committed to the promotion and advocacy of high ethical standards in funeral service. This includes the development and presentation of ongoing professional training opportunities for practitioners and educational programs for association members and the public. The Wethersfield-based association was founded in 1889.
