Woman’s Club Honored

On Thursday, April 8, members of Newtown Woman’s Club, GFWC, Inc, attended the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Connecticut, Inc, District 1 Spring Meeting for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Connecticut, Inc. The event was held at The Norwalk Inn.

The Newtown Woman’s Club won 16 awards: Leadership; Reaching Out Internationally (Smile Bags, Heifer International, World Food Day); State Project (for Vets Oasis); and Veterans (85 members, 59 hours and $2,892 donated).

Also, Beautification (Al’s Trail and celebration of Earth Day); Literacy ($150  grant given to children’s library, as well as The Big Read literacy program which involved all clubs); Poetry (“The Healing” by Patricia Gauvain); ESO Participation (48 books read by one member); Short Story (A Little Kindness Clears the Path to a New Career by Shirley Ferris); PR Annual Report (which was cited as being “very well written.  All inclusive of all the public relations”); and WHRC District 1 (107 participants, nine volunteer hours, $100, and two projects).

Also, Focus on Financial Issues (Investment Club meets monthly); Citizenship in Action Program (club members are active in working election polls and volunteering on local boards); Focus on Community Safety (rabies clinic participation); District 1 Helping Hands: Hunger in America (collections for FAITH Food Pantry, Newtown Meals on Wheels, and Salvation Army, also the knitting and sewing group, Canine Companions for Independence, and Bingo at nursing homes and assisted living facilities); and Fundraising (eight projects, 107 participants, 155 volunteer hours, and $7,590 raised, through six events).
