Western To Host Workshop On Preventing Violence In Schools

DANBURY — Western Connecticut State University will host a two-day violence-prevention workshop for teachers and school administrators June 22 and 23 at the Pinney Hall Conference Center.

“Preventing Violence and Promoting a Culture of Caring and Peace in Our Schools” is the workshop’s theme. WCSU Center for Conflict Resolution, in conjunction with the United Nations/International Association of University Presidents (UN/IAUP) Commission for Disarmament Education, Conflict Resolution, and Peace, is co-sponsoring the event.

Some of the discussion topics will include “Could Littleton happen here?” “Preventing gun violence in our schools,” and “Promoting collaboration, caring, and peace in our schools, how 2’s.”

Elaine Zimmerman, executive director of the state Commission on Children, General Assembly, will deliver the keynote address on Thursday, June 23, at 1 pm.

Curriculum displays include the Seattle Department of Justice Committee on “understanding and managing emotion,” and Dr Dan Olweus’s “anti-bully program,” an internationally recognized model from Sweden.

The two-day training workshop runs from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm on Thursday and from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm on Friday. The Pinney Hall Conference Center is located on Western’s Westside Campus.
