Boysâ Choir To Perform Locally This Weekend
The New Amsterdam Boysâ Choir, from East Harlem, N.Y., will be performing at Mount Pleasant AME Zion Church, 69 Rowan Street in Danbury, on Saturday, April 15, at 6:30 pm.
The group will also perform at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Northern Fairfield County, on Picketts Ridge Road in West Redding, during services at 9 and 11 am on Sunday, April 16.
The New Amsterdam Boysâ Choir was founded in 1986 by its music director, James Backmon, who grew up as a member of the Harlem Boysâ Choir. Its purpose is to help enrich the lives of young men in the East Harlem community using choral singing as the catalyst.
The organization is open to boys ages 9 through 14 regardless of race, creed or color. The choir has given over 200 performances in New York City and has gone on tours in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. There have also been several performance trips to Germany.
