World of Wine & Spirits captured the 1999-2000 Newtown Health & Racquetball Club’s women’s basketball championship Tuesday night to complete what was a near-perfect season.

In the finals, this “spirited” group of women rolled over the Gleason Group, 55-39, to walk away with “Championship” T-shirts - compliments of club owner George Arfaras.

Ruth Rowe led Newtown Color Center with 18 points while Carol Huizinga chipped in with 16. Megan LaCava added nine points, while Tracy Pelella tossed in eight.

Beth Gattey paced the Gleason Group with 13 points, Mary Dent hit for 12 and Jackie Petersen added 10.

World Wine & Spirits found itself in a strange situation as it had to play two games in one night. In game one, it knocked off a scrappy Newtown Color Center squad, 65-42. Once again, Ruth Rowe led the way with 24 points.

For Newtown Color Center, Andrea Morris ripped the nets for 24 points in a losing effort.

After the title game, the entire league was invited to a party at the Italian Pavilion. Among the honored guests was referee Bob Rogers.
