The Bulls withstood a furious rally and a potential game-tying layup in the final seconds, holding off the Huskies to capture the Intermediate Boys league championship on Sunday at Newtown High School.

The Bulls defeated the Huskies, 29-27.

The championship game featured an exciting finish and a boisterous crowd which cheered frantically with every exciting play. Maybe it was March Madness or simply love for the purity of a youth basketball game – there were no whiny, overpaid players . . . just 20 or so fifth- and sixth-grade kids trying hard to win and trying to impress mom and dad, brother and sister.

The Huskies trailed by as many as 13 points in the third quarter before storming back on a 12-4 run. In fact, the Huskies had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but the potential game-tying lay up bounced off the rim. The Bulls’ victory prompted fans to leap out of the stands and join the team in the center court celebration.

The game featured two very scrappy teams with players flying all over the court.

Gary Michael Andrews led the winners with 12 points and Chris Plavnicky added eight points and five assists. Max Reed and TJ Mueller also played well in the win.

Alex Meisel led all scorers with 12 points for the Huskies, while Matt Berquist added six. James Wiedeman and Greg Chernock also put forth strong efforts for the Huskies.
