Next Orienteering Meet On May 13

REDDING — The public is invited to join Western Connecticut Orienteering Club for its next orienteering meet. The group will be at Huntington State Park, on Sunset Hill Road, on Saturday, May 13. George and Denise Hebner of Easton will be setting up the event with Rick and Susie DeWitt of Bethel assisting.

Participants will use an orienteering map and compass to find their way across the terrain, seeking orange and white flags at various land features. The features are marked on the map and act as checkpoints along the course. Participants decide on the route to the feature and punch a scorecard to confirm finding the flag.

In orienteering as a competition, the winner punches all the flags in the shortest time. At the Huntington meet, all standard courses from beginner to expert will be available. Instruction and training will also be available for beginners. All ages and levels of experience are welcome.

Registration will be taken and participants can begin any time between 10 am and noon. Cost is $5 per person. Compasses will be available for loan if needed. For additional information contact George and Denise Hebner, 203/452-8342.
