Children’s Programs

At Monroe Library

MONROE — Monroe Public Library will host a Hanukkah program presented by Rabbi Shaul Praver, “the singing Rabbi,” from Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown, on Monday, December 15, at 4 pm. This program is for children in grades K-3.

Children will light Hanukkah candles with Rabbi Praver, sing songs, and eat latkas dipped in sour cream and applesauce. American folk songs will also be sung and the children will do a few fun dances.

The program will be presented in an ecumenical spirit, emphasizing the themes of Freedom and Light. No registration is necessary.

The library is also offering a Winter Solstice Celebration of Saturday, December 20, at 2 pm. Participants will learn the celestial reasons for the solstice and the origin of holiday celebrations with Susan Quincy, an environmental educator from Kellogg Environmental Center.

Children will hear stories from Native Americans and the ancient cultures of the Vikings and the Druids. As the light of the sun and fire play a central role in all solstice celebrations, participants will also make a luminary to take home.

This program is suitable for children ages 8 and above and their families. Refreshments will be served. Registration is necessary and can be made by calling the library’s Children’s Room.

The library is at 7 Fan Hill Road; telephone 452-5459.
