New Independent Party

Represents Majority

To the Editor

We are pleased to announce that we, and several other Newtown citizens, have started the process to form a new independent party that will offer candidates for town elections in November 2007.

The new party, to be named the Independent Party of Newtown, expects to place at least a dozen candidates on the ballot in November to run for seats on the Board of Selectman, Legislative Council, Board of Education, and possibly other boards and commissions. In addition, the party intends to cross-endorse candidates who share the philosophies set forth in our platform. We intend to announce our full slate of candidates in early August. Both of us will be running for seats on the Legislative Council from District 2.

It has become apparent that the two-party system in Newtown has failed the citizens of our community. There is more focus on maintaining the status quo than on finding innovative solutions to address problems with our schools, recreation, keeping Newtown affordable, and long-term planning. The intent of this new party is to offer voters a real choice in this election.

The Independent Party of Newtown is very interested in hearing from you about your reaction to our proposed platform. A draft of the platform and other important information about us can be viewed at www.independentpartyofnewtown.com. Please send your thoughts and ideas to us at wecan@independentpartyofnewtown.com.

We also welcome any citizens interested in running for local office and who share our interest in long-range planning, transparency in government, and working to forge solutions with local citizens on critical town issues. If you are not able to run for an elected office but you are interested in supporting our efforts by volunteering your time or helping to spread the news about the Independent Party of Newtown and its candidates, please contact us.

The majority of voters in Newtown are unaffiliated or independent. The local Democratic and Republican political parties don’t speak to them, or for them. We believe many registered Democrats and Republicans are not being properly represented by their respective parties at this time. We also believe that this majority of voters in Newtown are ready to step forward on Election Day to vote for candidates who support the type of political vision and leadership the Independent Party of Newtown is offering. To all of you who are tired of the same old politics, or who have an independent view of community matters, we urge you to come join the Independent Party of Newtown!

Sincerely,

Po Murray
