SNAPSHOT FOR 12/5/97: CLIFFORD ROTHE

Occupation: I am the owner of Dad's Deli at 43 South Main Street, Newtown.

We're open Monday through Saturday, from 6 am to 3 pm, and the phone number is

270-0385.

I've been in the food service and restaurant business for 20 years.

When I saw this space open up last April, I decided it was a good location and

this would be a great opportunity to start my own business, which is something

I've always wanted to do.

My specialty sandwich, or I guess you could say the thing that people seem to

like the best, is the Philly Steak Sandwich. I've had people who are actually

from Philadelphia come in here and say that it's better than what they can get

in Philadelphia.

Though I do all my own cooking here at Dad's Deli, I don't cook at home.

How long in Newtown: I live in Southbury now but I grew up in Newtown. I

graduated from Newtown High School in the Class of 1974.

Family: My wife, Gail, and I have been married 18 years. We have two children

named Candice, age 15, and Richard, age 4. Candice was the one who thought up

the name Dad's Deli.

Pets: None.

Hobbies: I enjoy spending time with my family and watching auto racing,

especially the NASCAR races.

Changes in Newtown: Of course, I would have to say growth in the town has made

the biggest change. But growth also means opportunity, especially for someone

to start up his own business as I have.

And growth is happening everywhere. We moved into Southbury 12 years ago, in

1985 just before IBM went in and while it was still pretty quiet. Now

Southbury is growing almost as fast as Newtown.

Personal philosophy: Basically, I feel that if what you want to do doesn't

hurt you or harm anyone else, then do it!
