Fuentes Races With Special Olympics Ski Team

Stephanie Fuentes, an 11-year-old resident of Newtown, is a member of the Oxford Special Olympics Ski team. Her team practices at Southington Monday and Thursday evenings and the team is getting ready to compete in the State Special Olympics on February 27 and 28 at Ski Sundown.

Fuentes comes from a skiing family. Her dad, Eduardo, is a safety ski ambassador at Okemo Mountain in Vermont and both her older brother and sister, Alexandra and Ricky, have been members of the Okemo Alpine Race team (her sister is ranked in the state of Vermont).

This is the first year the 11-year-old is on the Oxford team and, in the past, she had never been able to balance on skis. With hard work and support from her team instructors, she is now skiing with assistance down the beginner slopes at Southington.
