WORKS BY HERMAN ROSE AT MERCURY GALLERY
wd/gs set 2-15 #688537
BOSTON, MASS. â Mercury Gallery is presenting an exhibition of paintings by New York artist Herman Rose (American, b 1909) through March 13.
This is Roseâs first exhibition of works since the early 1990s and his first in Boston. Rose trained at the National Academy of Design in New York and later worked under Arshile Gorky in the Mural and Easel Division of the Federal Art Project during the Depression. His show at Mercury Gallery includes several paintings from this formative period.
âBiographyâ depicts the moving story of a young woman who has left home to work in a factory where she begins a love affair with her superior. Only later does she learn that he is married. Despondent, she breaks off the affair and unsuccessfully attempts suicide. During a trip into New York City, she meets a sailor in Central Park and falls in love. This ending is not depicted in the painting, however; the viewer is left to draw his or her own conclusions about the narrative.
âWest 56th Street Looking Eastâ gives a sensitively rendered view of the city with a strong juxtaposition of modern buildings against ornate Carnegie Hall.
âMixed Bouquet on Oriental Rugâ depicts a loose floral arrangement boldly centered in the composition. There is only a hint of the Oriental rug beneath the pitcher; the flowers advance and occupy a distinct space in the painting.
Rose is the recipient of numerous awards and honors and is represented in many American museums.
Mercury Gallery is at 8 Newbury Street. For information, 617-859-0054 or www.mercurygallery.com.
