The Extreme Force girls 13-and-under travel team from Western United Extreme, a premier soccer club sanctioned under the Newtown Soccer Club, moved its talents from the pitch to the community to collect balls, cleats and shin guards to send to Mozambique.
Children there are being taught by Kendall Zimmerman, a Newtown resident working with the Peace Corp.
The girls collected 75 balls, 13 pairs of shin guards, 28 pairs of cleats, two bags and three pumps.
Western United encourages its players to grow not only as young soccer players but also as young ladies, through social activities across the club and charity events within the community. Soccer And Rugby, a local store which supplies Western Unitedâs uniforms, made a cash donation to support shipping the equipment to the children in Mozambique. But due to the high cost of shipping the girls are searching for more sponsors.
On the pitch, the team recently won the Trumbull Sports Zone U13 winter league.
Meanwhile, the Newtown Soccer Club opened its spring season recently on the travel front with the Roadrunners (Girls U14) and Force (Boys U13) registering victories. Here are the results:
Girls U14
ROADRUNNERS 1, DARIEN 0 â The Roadrunners opened league play with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Darien. Anna Bernath scored with 10 minutes left for the only goal of the game. Kelly OâConnor, Sarah Attanasio and Alex Israel played great defense and Casey Rutter made some great saves to notch the shutout.
Boys U13
FORCE 6, RIDGEFIELD 0 â Travis Leblanc nailed down a hat trick to lead the Force past Ridgefield. Justin Brophy, Sean Burson and John Imbimbo also added a goal for the win.
