Alex Zachos Fund Goal Reached
The many friends of Middle Gate School third-grader Alex Zachos will be
pleased to learn that donations made to the Newtown Fund in Alex's name have
reached the goal that was set two months ago.
In addition to the many private donations that were sent in, several fund-
raising events were organized, all of which contributed to the successful
drive.
One continuing fund-raiser was a daily jog by third, fourth and fifth graders,
known as the "Run For Alex," that was held at Middle Gate School in the early
mornings before classes started.
Another was a Halloween fund-raiser Sunday, October 27 at Edmund Town Hall,
that included a costume contest, prizes and the movie "Casper."
An upcoming event is scheduled Thursday, November 14, when Middle Gate
children will spend the afternoon at "Grand Slam USA," a sports facility in
Norwalk. All funds raised from the advance reservations for that event were
also added to the fund.
As a result of these successful fund drives, an order was placed for the
motorized wheelchair that will be specially designed for Alex. It should
enable him to move about more independently, both at home and at school.
Alex, the son of Newtown residents Ann and John Zachos, is a 10-year-old boy
who was diagnosed with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy when he was three years
old. Because of the disease, his mobility has recently degenerated. For that
reason, it is hoped the motorized chair will be of great benefit to him.
