Connie Harris Fraser, of 9 Grand Place, Newtown, was recently awarded the
$1,000 first prize for full-sized innovative quilts in the Pennsylvania
National Quilt Extravaganza, held at Fort Washington, PA, September 14-17.
The theme of the contest was "From Patches to Neon." Over 150 quilts had been
juried into the competition by slides submitted by the quilters. Both
traditional and innovative quilts were eligible to compete. In addition to the
contest quilts, over 250 non-competition quilts were displayed in the Expo
Center.
The 83 by 87-inch quilt by Mrs Fraser, "Beneath the Blackness There Was
Color," is an impression of a 1904 water garden scene by Claude Monet. It has
won awards in several other states since its completion in April 1992. It was
one of 13 quilts featured in the American Quilter's Society 1994 Wall
Calendar.
The quilt has been juried into the American International Quilt Association
show in Houston, Texas, where it will appear November 2-5.
Mrs Fraser is an active member of the Scrapbag Quilters of Newtown; the Nutmeg
Quilt Guild, which meets in Ridgefield; and the Wings Falls Quilt Guild, which
meets in Glens Falls, NY.
