How To Help Prevent Child Abuse

•   Be a nurturing parent.

•   Help a friend, neighbor, or relative.

•   Help yourself.

•   Never shake a baby.

•   Get involved – advocate for services to help families.

•   Help to develop parenting resources.

•   Promote programs in schools.

•   Monitor your child’s television and video viewing.

•   Volunteer at a local child abuse program.

•   Report suspected abuse or neglect. Call the 24-hour DCF Hotline at 800-842-2288.

•   Become a foster or adoptive parent. Call 888-KID-HERO.

•   Mentor a youth in DCF care. Call 888-285-2210.

 

What A Parent Can Do When

Everyday Pressures Build Up

•   Take a deep breath.

•   Close your eyes, pretend you’re hear-ing what your child is about to hear.

•   Press your lips together and count to 20, backwards.

•   Put yourself in time out.

•   Phone a friend.

•   If someone can watch your child, go outside and take a walk.

•   Turn on some music.

•   Splash water on your face.

•   Hug a pillow.

•   Hug yourself after you cool down… compliment yourself on being a great parent.
