NHS Students Pick The Nighthawk As A New Mascot

Although the Newtown High School Indian mascot is now a lame duck, it will fly

again this coming fall as a Night Hawk.

In a student vote, the Night Hawk won in a landslide over the Dragon in a

head-to-head battle for the right to be the school's next mascot. The final

tally was 757 to 395. The two finalists were selected last week after students

voted from a list of five, which also included the Blue Hornets, the

Lightning, the Eagle.

"I'm pleased with the results," said NHS Principal Bill Manfredonia, who

announced the new mascot Wednesday morning. "I'm very happy with the job our

students did."

The NHS students were given the task of choosing a new mascot after last

winter's controversial decision by the NHS administration to dump the longtime

Indian mascot, which was held in such high regard with many current NHS

students. The move was prompted by some members of the community who felt the

NHS mascot was a dishonor to Native Americans.

Mr Manfredonia said he expected the mascot change to be difficult for people

to get used to in the early going, but said over time, he expects they will

get used to it.

The principal's task at hand is to come up with a logo for the Night Hawk, a

nocturnal bird of prey. He plans to work with art students in the fall to come

up with a new design.

Ray Tompkins of Superstar Sports in the Sand Hill Plaza said Wednesday that

once the school determines an official logo, he'll have the NHS mascot apparel

available for students.

"Maybe it will be the same logo as the old New Haven Night Hawks," Mr Tompkins

joked, referring to the old hockey team from the American Hockey League (AHL).

The high school's official blue and gold colors will remain the same.
