Scout Organizes A Face-Lift For Cullens Memorial
BY MICHELE HOGAN
Bobby Murdy and Troop 70 of the Boy Scouts have given Cullens Memorial a new
look.
It all started when Bobby was looking for a project to attain his Eagle
certification in Boy Scouts. He noticed that Cullens Memorial was showing
signs of wear and tear from all the scouting and other community functions
that have been held there over the years.
He drew up a detailed plan for fixing the place up, got approval from the
scout office, and then went about asking for donations of time and materials.
Bobby said that the community has been incredibly helpful and supportive.
Newtown Hardware, Newtown Color Center, Home Depot, Mathison Floors, Sears and
Cullens Memorial all contributed substantially to the supplies and equipment
necessary to get the place fixed up.
After these businesses had made their donations, there was nothing that needed
to be purchased at all. But there was a significant amount of work to be done.
Twenty-six people volunteered their time for a total of 136 hours' work over a
five-day period. Everyone pitched in.
Bobby mentioned names of a few of the volunteers who contributed the most to
the project.
He said that Gene Cox, Scoutmaster, oversaw the project, and adults Al Cuifo,
Chris Cuifo, Erin Cox, Rich Murdy and Kathy Murdy handled the electrical
equipment, such as floor strippers and buffers.
Boy Scouts Fred Adler and Ryan Cuifo painted the kitchen cabinets and the
trim, and polyurethaned the floors. Billy Speirs blackened the old wood stove.
When all the messy work was done, Rich Murdy and the other adults laid the
carpeting.
The Boy Scouts are looking forward to attending scouting and other community
functions at the newly refurbished Cullens Memorial.
