State Police Seeking Two Evading Responsibility For Incident
Newtown Police assisted Connecticut State Police seeking two individuals who had fled on foot from a motor vehicle crash on I-84.
At 1:29 pm Wednesday, April 22, Connecticut State Police (CSP) contacted the Newtown Police Department (NPD) to request assistance in searching for two individuals who had fled on foot from a motor vehicle accident on I-84. The individuals were last seen in the area of The Boulevard in Newtown.
A canine search was conducted in the area, leading to Church Hill Road.
The police department communicated with The Hawley School, St Rose School and Newtown Middle School, and assisted living facilities in the area to maintain the safety of all students and residents. This resulted in a short delay to school dismissals.
Officers located and arrested one of the individuals on School House Hill Road. CT State Police is handling the criminal investigation into this matter.
NPD officers have cleared the search area and are remaining at the area schools to ensure a smooth and safe dismissal.
Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps were dispatched to I-84 East prior to Exit 10 for the reported crash that then resulted in CSP contacting the local police for assistance.

Where was our CodeRED?
For over 4 years Newtown has a CodeRED system. The town tells residents it exists for emergencies and points to things like missing persons, wildfires, and criminal activity as the kinds of incidents it is meant to address. Yet we had no CodeRED for Kateri Doty, no CodeRED for the brush fires, and no CodeRED for yesterday’s manhunt with police and tracking dogs moving through our backyards.
That is not one oversight. That is a pattern.
Under sleepy Bruce Walczak, the town has an emergency notification system that never seems to get used when actual emergencies happen.
Whether or not Bruce physically sends the alert himself is beside the point. If the system is not being used, if residents are left hearing about dangerous situations from Facebook and the neighbors’ kids instead of from their own government, then that failure belongs to him.
Newtown residents should not have to guess when there is a public safety issue unfolding around them. If Bruce Walcz”zzz”ak cannot make sure an emergency alert system is used for emergencies, then what exactly is he doing?
