Fun Lacrosse Benefit

Matt Vavrek, left, and Molly Mahony held the first Youth Athletic Scholarship (YAS) lacrosse benefit on Monday, April 16, at Treadwell Park. Vavrek created the scholarship as a community service project for his confirmation at St. Rose Church and Mahony joined in to form a girls team. The funds will be used to assist Newtown athletes in participating in any Newtown sports. More than $400 was raised as over 30 seventh and eighth grade girls and boys braved the weather for the 7v7 lacrosse tournament. There was also a big collection of used lacrosse equipment donated to the cause. Vavrek and Mahony collected items donated by local merchants like Bagel Delight, The Ice Cream Shop, Style, Five Guys Burgers, Swanky Franks, The Drug Center and Newtown Nails for a raffle. Mr. Thompson, president of the Newtown Lacrosse Association, was on hand to officiate the event.
