Our Favorite Celebrities
There is something both attractive and repulsive about celebrity -
particularly the Hollywood kind of celebrity, which sits on a foundation of
artifice. Good-looking movie stars play out life stories that almost never
occur in reality, making them bigger than life. Their compensation is usually
bigger than life, too - millions of dollars for a short period of
make-believe. Perhaps this is why the whole enterprise remains a little
repulsive to ordinary people, who labor in unrelenting reality for far more
modest rewards. So when Propaganda Films announced last week that it would be
coming to Newtown to shoot some juvenile prison scenes at Fairfield Hills for
the movie Sleepers, starring Robert DeNiro and Brad Pitt, we were at once a
somewhat proud and somewhat abashed.
It turns out that neither Robert DeNiro nor Brad Pitt is likely to be in
Newtown during the shooting; their scenes are all slated to be filmed in New
York City. But some of our favorite stars will be part of the local filming -
the people of Newtown. A casting call for "extras" has been set for Monday,
August 28, from noon to 4 pm in the Alexandria Room at Edmond Town Hall.
The brief movie careers of Newtowners won't earn them millions, but we are
sure it will be their performances that will draw crowds to the Edmond Town
Hall Theater, when Sleepers comes to town. Even though they will be playing
juvenile delinquents, guards, and other uncharacteristic roles in the
background, we will recognize their faces as friends and neighbors. They will
be, for one movie anyway, our favorite celebrities.
