SNAPSHOT JAN ANDRAS
Occupation: Executive assistant to the first selectman. I also clerk meetings
for Board of Selectmen (3« years), WPCA (10 years), Board of Health (1«
years), Local Housing Partnership (4 or 5 years), and I just resigned after 10
years as clerk for Legislative Council.
How long in Newtown: Let's just say I've lived in town most of my life.
Biggest change in Newtown: More houses, less woods, less fields, less cows - I
miss the cows.
Family: My husband, Bill, and our three kids, Amy, David, Paul. My husband
drives a school bus. We both grew up in Newtown; we lived across the street
from each other. My family moved up here in 1960 when my father was a blaster
for 84 [project]. My parents moved back to Ducktown, Tenn., and my four
brothers followed them back. The funny thing about Ducktown is it's next to
Turtletown. Ducktown is a very small town; it makes Newtown look like a
metropolis. During the last summer Olympics, they held the white water rafting
and kayaking [events] in Ducktown.
Pets: I have a miniature Pinscher, and eight chickens. The chickens are bigger
than the dog. We used to have 400 chickens but I found out I was allergic to
them.
Organizations: Co-director of Memorial Day Weekend Soccer Tournament. This
year we'll have about 100 teams.
Hobbies: Just my kids. I'm out so many nights I don't have time for anything
else.
Favorite food: Linguini with white clam sauce. And I'm a chocoholic. For
breakfast I usually have a Hershey bar and diet Coke.
Favorite place outdoors in Newtown: The top of Castle Hill - I love to go up
there. We always like to walk to the mica mines off the end of Purdy Station
Road, but now there are houses there, and we don't know how to get through.
Most vivid memory of Newtown: I'll never forget the night the Yankee Drover
burned down. I still picture the Drover every time I drive up Main Street.
Personal philosophy: Know the rules and follow the rules. I carry Robert's
Rules of Order, the Town Charter, and a pocket-sized Bible in my purse at all
times.
