Appalachian Trail Facts

In 1923, the very first section of the Appalachian Trail - the Palisades

Interstate Park - was completed.

One-fourth of the 2,158-mile Appalachian Trail lies in Virginia.

In 1994, 1,200 thru-hikers started their journey, but only 175 finished.

It is estimated that three to four million people are on the trail each year.

This includes day-hikers, those hiking for an extended period, and people

visiting state and national parks who don't even realize they are on the AT.

The Great Smokey Mountains National Park features the highest elevations of

the entire footpath.

The AT is a national scenic trail under federal protection. There are no fees,

memberships, or permits required for walking on the trail.

The cost of a five to six month through-hike is estimated to be approximately

$3,000 minimum (not including equipment). This covers expenses such as food

and treats, as well as postage.

Each year, 4,500 men and women contribute more than 147,000 hours of volunteer

work on the AT or adjacent lands.

Winter-like weather occurs in the southern Appalachians during April and May,

and in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine in late spring and early fall.

There are more than 267 three-sided shelters located along the AT.
