Kate Zimmerman Earns Tandy Scholarship
Newtown High School senior Kate Zimmerman has been awarded a $1,000
scholarship for from the Tandy Corporation of Fort Worth, Texas.
Kate, 17, one of only 100 students nationwide to receive a scholarship, will
have her photo appear in the April 22 issues of Time and Forbes magazines and
the April 29 issue of Fortune magazine along with other winners.
Each year, the Tandy Corporation and Radio Shack seek out and reward 200 of
the "brightest minds in America's classrooms." As part of the company's Tandy
Technology Scholars program, a total of $350,000 in awards and scholarships
are presented to teachers and students who have achieved excellence in the
areas of science, computer science and mathematics.
As part of the application process, Kate wrote an essay on how the idea of
programming robots to play musical instruments.
The Rowledge Pond Road resident is ranked first in the NHS class of 1996 and
has been accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell and
Princeton. She hopes to study aeronautical engineering while in college.
Kate was a member of the NHS field hockey team and is now playing on the
school's girls' lacrosse team.
The Tandy Corporation began the scholarship program in 1989 to better
recognize America's "Champions of the Classroom."
According to Tandy, 76 percent of all U.S. high schools are enrolled in the
program, which is funded by the electronics company and administered by Texas
Christian University.
Other NHS students nominated for the award were Courtney Elf, Curtis
Hussarungsri, Caragh Reilly and Ward Richardson.
Only those in the top two percent of their graduating class are eligible to be
nominated.
