NHS Band Kicks Off Fund Raising Drive
B Y D OROTHY E VANS
The Newtown High School Band, directed by Jack Zamary and comprising 165
musicians and 33 color guard members, is launching a series of fund raising
events this weekend.
Parents and band members will be working side by side to help raise funds to
support ongoing band expenses, such as bus transportation costs, refurbishment
of uniforms and replacement or purchase of band instruments and equipment.
Band parents also pick up half the expense for travel costs to the annual St.
Patrick's Day Parade in New York City. The Board of Education covers the
balance of the transportation cost for that event.
One regular fund raising activity is a monthly Can and Bottle Drive, with the
first drive scheduled to take place Saturday, September 14 from 9-12:30 at the
corner of Queen Street and Church Hill Road.
Band parent and publicity chairperson JoAnn DiDonato is hoping everyone will
get out and support the drive, saving up their recyclables.
"The kids work very hard and we want to help them any way we can," Mrs
Didonato said Monday.
Residents wishing to drop off cans and bottles at other times during the week
may use the specially marked Newtown Band receptacles at Stop and Shop or at
the landfill on South Main Street. Band parents will take charge of picking up
items from those receptacles, Mrs DiDonato said.
Band Performance Schedule
SEPTEMBER 21: "March-a-thon" at 10 am at Fairfield Hills Hospital. Band
members will be looking for sponsors and asking for pledges of $1/mile for a
5-mile trek. A ceramic coffee cup with the band logo will be given to all
those who agree to sponsor a band member.
OCTOBER 12: Norwich Free Academy fall festival competition
OCTOBER 18: Joe P. Grasso competition hosted by Newtown
OCTOBER 26: Rockville High School festival
NOVEMBER 1: Danbury High School band competition
NOVEMBER 19: Cadets Marching Band Collective (CMBC) championships held at
Giants' Stadium in the Meadowlands, N.J. This event gathers bands from several
northeastern states for joint competition.
DECEMBER 28: Citrus Bowl Parade, Orlando, Florida
In addition to these competition events, the band performs during halftime at
all Newtown High home and away football games.
An adult bingo night scheduled for Saturday night in October is still in the
planning stages, according to Mrs DiDonato. She will be happy to answer any
questions and welcomes ideas for further fund raising activities. For more
information about the band, please call her at 426-5733.
