Three NHS Seniors Are National Merit Finalists

Jonathan Hill, Justin Davis and Tristan Schwartzman of Newtown High School

made the top one percent of US high school graduating seniors, based on their

SAT scores.

They have become finalists in the 1998 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Don Elliott, guidance counselor at Newtown High School, said that he can't

remember ever having three finalist in the same year, and he has been at the

high school for 18 years.

Sometime in March or April, some 7,400 Merit Scholarship winners will be drawn

from the 14,000 finalists, based on their academic success.

Every finalist will be considered for the 2,200 National Merit $2,000

scholarships as well as scholarships run by specific colleges and universities

throughout the United States.

Jonathan is looking at Williams University or University of Connecticut.

Justin is considering Duke University or the Naval Academy, and Tristan is

thinking about both Pace University and New York University.

Mr Elliott congratulated the students on their outstanding performance in this

national competition.
