Gardeners Gather Up Their Plants & Flowers For Show
(two photos w/ cuts, no story)
(-Bee Photos, Hicks)
The front bedroom of the Matthew Curtiss House has probably never looked
prettier: On Friday and Saturday, June 26-27, the Garden Club of Newtown
presented "A Colonial Day" at the Matthew Curtiss House. Emphasis throughout
the standard flower show was on fresh flowers, and somehow the displays of
flowers and plants managed to look beautiful even in the oppressive heat of
Friday's temperatures. Seen in the hutch above, Pat Benkovich won the blue
ribbon for Design Class III with her entry, "Gather Ye Rosebuds," as well as a
Tri-Color Flower Show Award from the judges. Members from Newtown, and three
additional garden clubs, participated in the two-day show. Entries were
accepted in five design classes, and 35 horticulture classes. There were two
special exhibits. Beth Danziger's special exhibit, "Color Me," concerning
plants used for dyes, was so well received by the show's judges Ms Danziger
was invited to present the educational exhibit at the state flower show in
Hartford next March.
In Class IV, "How Does Your Garden Grow?" of the design division, gardeners
were challenged to create a design using a watering can, staged on benches of
the house's back porch. At left is Dale O'Brien's first place winner; below,
Nancy Rowe's entry.
