Hawley School Renovation Cost Overruns
Hawley School Renovation
Cost Overruns
To the Editor:
On July 20 of this year, The News Times printed an editorial titled âBethel High Estimated Costs For Renovations Go Up, So Project Is Wisely Cut Back.â Basically, over a year ago, the Bethel voters approved a $25.3 million renovation project for Bethel High School. Subsequent to this approval, it was recently determined that the planned renovations would now cost an additional $4 million. How did the Building Committee resolve this issue? They wisely decided to reduce the size of the project from 45,000 square feet to 37,000 square feet. The revised project will mean a smaller cafeteria, a smaller lobby and some rooms that will be smaller than originally planned.
Coincidently, a July 22 article in The Newtown Bee reported that at a July 18 Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Evan Pitkoff stated that the $3.3 million already approved and budgeted for the renovation of the Hawley School will now be insufficient. The latest projection has placed the total cost of this project at $4.5 million, an over 36 percent increase. One can only hope that our Newtown officials will take the lead from Bethel and scale back the original plans for the Hawley School renovations.
