The Newtown Police Department will conduct its fourth educational program on
law enforcement and the criminal justice system known as Citizens Police
Academy starting on September 25.
The program is slated to run on 10 consecutive Wednesday nights and will be at
the police station.
The upcoming course will be coordinated by Officer Michael Kehoe.
Applications for participation in the course are now being accepted. People
interested in participating may pick up an application form at the police
station at 3 Main Street or may call the station at 426-5841.
In order to conduct the course, at least 18 people must participate. A maximum
of 25 people can attend.
Citizens Police Academy is designed to help business people and residents get
an overview of local law enforcement and how its relates to the criminal
justice system.
The free course contains a ride-along component in which participants will be
able to ride in a patrol car for four hours to observe how patrol operations
work. The participants will not be placed in potentially dangerous situations
and will remain in the patrol car in the event of sensitive situations.
