BPW Offers Scholarships For Working Women

(with photo)

The scholarship committee of the Newtown Business and Professional Women's

Club announced this week that four $500 scholarships for working women will be

awarded at the state BPW convention in May.

Applications for these scholarships are available at the Newtown Florist on

Church Hill Road or through Mae S. Schmidle, BPW scholarship chairman.

"The purpose of the scholarships is to assist working women to be able to go

back to school and either upgrade their skills, advance their degree status or

totally change their careers," Mrs Schmidle said.

The scholarships are being provided through the Education Fund of the

Connecticut Federation of BPW clubs.

To apply, an applicant must be a woman 25 years of age or older and a United

States citizen. The applicant must be officially accepted into an accredited

program or course of study at a United States institution.

The applicant must have a definite plan to use the desired training to improve

chances for advancement, to train for a new career field, or to enter or

re-enter the job market. She also must have a demonstrated need for financial

assistance to upgrade skills or complete education for advancement.

These scholarships do not cover study for doctoral level programs,

correspondence courses, or post-doctoral studies.

A 250-word essay stating why the applicant needs this scholarship must be

submitted. The resume form provided must accompany the application and a

reference must be submitted.

The completed applications, resume forms and essay must be returned by March

15 to Newtown Florist or to Mae S. Schmidle, 53 Echo Valley Road, Newtown

06470.
