New Book Chronicles An Appalachian Adventure

(with book cover)

By Andrea Zimmermann

Anyone who loves hiking, adventure, good writing and spectacular photography

will find reward between the covers of Appalachian Adventure: From Georgia to

Maine - A Spectacular Journey on the Great American Trail (Longstreet Press,

Atlanta, 1995, hardback, $25).

On March 5, 1995, journalist/photographer tag-teams laced up their boots,

strapped on packs and set out to document the 2,158 mile famed trail. The

project involved five East Coast newspapers - The Atlanta

Journal-Constitution, The News & Observer of Raleigh, the Pittsburgh

Post-Gazette, The Hartford Courant , and the Maine Sunday Telegram. Each

covered approximately 470 miles of the trail in its geographical area and

those on the trail provided a story and photographs weekly for all

publications to run simultaneously. ( Hartford Courant science and nature

writer Steve Grant, a Newtown resident, talked about his piece of the

adventure in an article that appeared in The Newtown Bee September 1, 1995.)

The chronicle, breathtaking color photographs and trail facts are reproduced

here as permanent record.

The forward is by Gaylord Nelson, the senator who was instrumental in

preserving the trail by introducing bills that evolved into the National

Trails System Act, which Congress passed in 1968.

The curious who open this book will find it difficult to pass up.
