College Sports (Sept. 13)
Former NHS All-State lineman Brian Gleason is one of the captains of this
year's University of Connecticut football team. Starting on the defensive line
last season, Gleason made 48 tackles and had two sacks in eight games. At 6-3,
263 pounds, Gleason will captain the team along with Wilbur Gillard.
Newtown High's all-time leading soccer goal scorer, John Ball , is a captain
this season with the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team.
Ball, a senior, starts as a fullback for the Division II national power.
Newtown High School's all-time leading rusher Joe Lato has developed into one
of the top offensive weapons at Nichols College this season. In the Bisons'
season opener on September 8, Lato, a junior, rushed for 58 yards on 16
carries and caught four passes for 24 yards. Nichols lost the game, 16-13 to
Mass Maritime.
NHS grad Hugh Jones is starting this season as a senior with the Colgate
University men's soccer team in Division I. Jones has started all three games
for the Red Raiders who are 1-2.
Former NHS soccer standout Katie Ball is playing this fall for the women's
soccer team at Western Connecticut State University where she made the team as
a walk-on freshman.
