Chalk It Up To Waterbury History: Drawing Competition

WATERBURY — Main Street Waterbury, along with CPTV and the Northwest CT Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, is inviting students, amateurs and individual artists to use their imagination and chalk up the Waterbury Green during the 3rd Annual Downtown Draw on Saturday, October 6, from 9 am to 1 pm.

On the day of the event, teams consisting of one to five members will create chalk murals along the Downtown Green sidewalks. Chalk will be provided for each team, but participants are encouraged to bring their own supplemental supplies.  Prizes will be presented in the categories of School, Family, Individual Youth and Individual Adult.

Pre-registration is preferred by the end of September but walk ups will also be welcomed on the day of the event.

In support of Ken Burns’ new PBS series about World War II, in which Waterbury is featured, organizers are asking school teams to create their squares based on the theme of “Positive Homefront Images of WWII.”  The winning school team will be awarded a 2007 Downtown Draw trophy. Other category winners will receive prizes and local notoriety. Last year’s winners included non-Waterbury residents.

The event is scheduled to take place rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, an alternative venue will be provided. To register for the 3rd Annual Downtown Draw, contact Main Street Waterbury at 203-757-0701 extension 302 or visit MainStreetWaterbury.com.

Main Street Waterbury is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community organization dedicated to the mission of downtown Waterbury revitalization and historic preservation. By improving the physical appearance of downtown Waterbury, promoting its architectural and cultural assets, organizing volunteer initiatives, sponsoring events, and fostering public and private partnerships, Main Street Waterbury is working to rejuvenate Waterbury’s downtown district without sacrificing its character or heritage.
